I Love You by Damien Hirst consists of various-colored dead butterflies pinned to a red background and household gloss. It is one of a series of similar works of butterflies with different backgrounds. This series of work was begun shortly after his graduation from art school in London after seeing flies get stuck on primed canvas in his studio. He took this idea and used butterflies instead to create something beautiful. This is one of his earliest use of butterflies, which has become one of his main motifs in his work. He explains his use of butterflies saying that they represent something that people universally love.
