Monkeys feature in several of Banksy’s works, including “TNT Detonator Monkey”, “The Thinker” and “Laugh Now.” It features a standing chimpanzee wearing a sandwich board stating, “Laugh now — but someday we’ll be in charge.” In a simple stencil and a few well-chosen words, Banksy reminds viewers of their origins and that the human race will one day be further down the food chain as they used to be. It first appeared in 2002. It is thought there are ten in existence but since Banksy is so private, no one except the artist knows how many he created or even if the stencil has been destroyed. One copy sold at the 2008 Bonham’s Art Sale for almost $500,000. Not bad for a graffiti artist.
