Mickey Blue Glitter by Damien Hirst was made at the request of Disney as part of his iconic Spot Paintings, which are among his most widely-recognized works. in this 2016 painting, he reimagines Mickey Mouse using only circular shapes against a blue background. About this work and its companion rendering of Minnie Mouse he says, “They] represent happiness and the joy of being a kid and I have reduced the shapes down to the basic elements of a few simple spots…” In Mickey Blue Glitter, he shows the influence of artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. The original Mickey Mouse piece of 2012 was made to be auctioned off by London-based Kids Company, which provides educational and emotional support to inner-city children, and Hirst continues to support the organization and its use of arts therapy.
